Brownfield oil production

Brownfields suffer from higher operating costs, declining oil production, aging equipment, and a complex subsurface configuration of pressure and saturation. These issues make redevelopment concepts requiring substantial new investment less attractive and risky.

With the price of oil near five-year lows, it is interesting to see these same strategies move to the forefront in the oil and gas industry today. Historically Investment-centric Businesses For the past few years, with oil prices generally exceeding $100 per barrel, oil and gas companies have been investing heavily in developing new production facilities. Due to the remote locations of offshore work, the successful execution of brownfield integration projects is business critical. Given the large and complex project scope, the alignment of new and existing facilities encompasses FPSO, offshore platforms, and associated subsea tie-ins, pipelines, risers, manifolds and subsea facilities, all of which present facility integration challenges. Brownfields suffer from higher operating costs, declining oil production, aging equipment, and a complex subsurface configuration of pressure and saturation. These issues make redevelopment concepts requiring substantial new investment less attractive and risky. Brownfield projects in turn are those where most of these ancillary facilities and part of the operating facility is already existing and the owner wants to add an additional plant or either enhance its operating capacity or increase its product profile. Project completion schedule, production downtime and facilities outage also presents a challenge to both the construction contractor and the asset. This paper will present a case study on one of the major Brownfield project that was recently constructed and commissioned in Kuwait Oil Company (KOC).
